New Dorp
New Dorp lies along the east shore of Staten Island. The name derives from the term Nieuw Dorp, which is Dutch for New Village. New Dorp has a very distinct and prominent history specifically to the early European settlers, many from the Netherlands originally. During the 1960s, suburbanization in New Dorp ran rampant, as it did in many Staten Island neighborhoods after the construction of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, connecting Staten Island to Brooklyn. Despite surrounding development, the neighborhood has retained its distinct character as a town and is one of the most thriving commercial centers with department and grocery store-anchored shopping centers sprawled along Hylan Boulevard from New Dorp Lane. Residents of New Dorp can balance out the hustle and bustle with the calming New Dorp Beach along the shore of the neighborhood. Check out New Dorp homes for sale to get a peek into New Dorp Life.
